We made these recordings primarily to use on our own Motivational Interviewing courses. We have been training on this topic for 20 years and wanted some demonstration material that was relevant to the work lives of our course participants in Britain and that would provoke discussion and understanding of motivational interviewing principles.

The material is not intended to be self-explanatory or a stand-alone teaching aid. We anticipate that it might be useful in the following settings:

  • For trainers, to be shown as part of a course accompanied by explanation and discussion.
  • For course participants to refresh and continue their learning after attending a training workshop

Section 1 – 6 scenarios each between 15 and 20 mins long

Sarah A midwife raises the issue of smoking with a pregnant mother and offers support if she wants to quit.

Jean Jean has bipolar disorder and has not been taking her medication consistently. She discusses this with her psychologist.

Geoff Geoff has been diagnosed with diabetes and returns to the outpatients department to discuss the lifestyle changes that will help him to manage his condition.

Jasmine A trainee beautician is falling behind with her course work and not meeting college requirements. The college counsellor explores the reasons behind this. 

Shirley An employment advisor helps a single mother explore her options for returning to the workforce.

Joe Remanded on bail and living in a bail hostel. He has broken the rules by bringing alcohol in. The hostel manager gives him a final warning and helps him to consider alternative ways of coping.
