Quick Overview

This 2 day non-residential course in Birmingham introduces the core principles of motivational interviewing and provides practice in the essential skills applied in a range of settings. Participants are welcome from any setting, for example, psychology, health, criminal justice, education and employment. Completion of this workshop is the foundation for later attendance at Steps 2 and 3 and completion of an assignment leading to the Advanced certificate. It replaces our Introduction to Motivational Interviewing and can be completed as a standalone workshop for people who do not wish to move on to steps 2 and 3.

By the end of the course participants will be able to

  • discuss the concept of motivation and relate it to a model of the way people change. 
  •  make a realistic assessment of a service user’s(client or patient)’s motivation 
  • use their interviewing and counselling skills to unlock people’s willingness and ability to act in their own best interests :

Topics include;

  • The Spirit of MI and Dangerous Assumptions
  • Core Skills to express empathy (open questions, reflection, affirmation and summarising)
  • Sustain talk and discord. The art of rolling with resistance
  • Engaging the reluctant or non-verbal service user
  • Ambivalence, the decisional balance and stages of change
  • Motivation as a combination of importance and confidence
  • Building importance by developing awareness of discrepancy
  • Building self-efficacy (confidence)by focussing on strengths
  • Types of change talk at different stages in the process; recognising and building on it
  • Exchanging information without falling into the expert trap
For staff of English alcohol and drug agencies the course supports DANOS standards. For Health professionals in the UK this course is in accordance with NICE guidance on behaviour chnage (Oct 2007)

Continuing to Learn Motivational Interviewing

Research into the teaching of motivational interviewing has shown that full competence is only reached when a typical 2-day introductory workshop is backed up by supervised practice in the workplace (Miller et al 2005). Many organisations are able to provide this in-house and we strongly recommend that agencies commissioning M.I. training build such supervision in to their overall staff development plan.

However, we have found that not everyone who attends our courses has such help to consolidate and continue their learning once the course is over. Consequently we are now offering M.I. supervision that can be customised to individual need. Possible formats are:

  • Telephone coaching
  • Critique and feedback on taped sessions with clients
  • One to one supervision.

Pip Mason
Pip trained as a nurseand studied cognitive-behavioural approaches to counselling people with addictions problems. She is author of 'Health Behavior Change, A Guide for Health Professionals' and author of numerous training packages relating to substance use, counselling and health promotion. Pip is a member of the international network of motivational interviewing trainers (MINT). She has until recently been practicing MI with people with gambling problems in 1-1 and group work settings.
