Quick Overview

This 2 day non-residential course in Birmingham is for people who have already undertaken some introductory study of motivational interviewing and want to refresh and extend their skills. Additionally people who have not been on any training on this topic before but have some familiarity with it via reading etc may use this course as a gateway to our Advanced course. It is not intended for complete beginners.

Participants are welcome from any setting, for example, health, criminal justice, education and employment.


For staff of English alcohol and drug agencies the course supports DANOS standards HSC233, HSC3111, AB2, HSC33, AF2, AI1.

For health professionals in the UK this course is in accordance with NICE guidance on behaviour change (Oct 2007).

The course will provide an opportunity for participants to

  • re-examine the key concepts of ambivalence, change talk and resistance
  • explore development of core skills applied within the processes of Engagement, Focussing, Evoking and Planning
  • practice under supervision and receive feedback on their developing skills
  • discuss tricky situations and cases from their own workplace (confidentiality rules apply)

Trainers:

Pip Mason
Pip is a nurse, trained in cognitive-behavioural approaches to counselling people with addictions problems. She is co-author (with Steve Rollnick and Chris Butler) of Health Behavior Change, A Guide for Health Professionals and author of numerous training packages relating to substance use, counselling and health promotion. Pip is a member of the international network of motivational interviewing trainers.
