Quick Overview

This course is for staff of smoking cessation, alcohol, drug and gambling services who are helping clients to make changes in their substance use and have a role in the prevention and management of relapse.

The course supports DANOS standards AB2, AC1, AI1, AI2.

By the end of the course participants will be able to

  • Discuss the difference between a lapse and a relapse
  • Know how to help clients predict the likelihood of relapse and prepare to prevent it happening
  • Describe and apply a model for understanding how relapses occur
  • Support clients through relapse
  • Help clients learn from their relapses to re-cycle through the stages of change.

Trainers:

Pip Mason
Pip is a nurse, trained in cognitive-behavioural approaches to counselling people with addictions problems. She is co-author (with Steve Rollnick and Chris Butler) of Health Behavior Change, A Guide for Health Professionals and author of numerous training packages relating to substance use, counselling and health promotion. Pip is a member of the international network of motivational interviewing trainers.
