Quick Overview

This 2 day non-residential course introduces a social learning approach to problems of addiction and dependence and the principles of cognitive-behavioural therapy.

The course supports Drug and Alcohol National Occupational Standards  AB2.2012, , AD1.2012,  AF2.2012,  AI1.2012, AI2.2012, SCDHSC0344

By the end of the course participants will be able to

  • Discuss the social learning approach to understanding addiction problems
  • Describe how thoughts, feelings and behaviour interconnect
  • Relate a cognitive-behavioural approach to the 'stages of change' model
  • Enable clients to set behavioural goals
  • Enable clients to identify cognitive and behavioural cues related to their addictive behaviours such as drinking, drug use and gambling
  • Enable clients to identify the functions their problem behavior has for them and use this understanding to prevent relapse.

Trainers:

Pip Mason
Pip is a nurse, trained in cognitive-behavioural approaches to counselling people with addictions problems. She is co-author (with Steve Rollnick and Chris Butler) of Health Behavior Change, A Guide for Health Professionals and author of numerous training packages relating to substance use, counselling and health promotion. Pip is a member of the international network of motivational interviewing trainers.

The Beeches Management Centre
3 miles from Birmingham City Centre within easy reach of motorway networks and a taxi journey from either Birmingham New Street Station or Birmingham International airport. It is set in 5 acres of grounds in leafy Bournville and a short walk away from Cadbury World! There is full disabled access. For people travelling from afar residential facilities are available at an extra charge, in en-suite rooms with telephone and TV.
