Quick Overview

This 3 day course aims to give participants who have already completed introductory and intermediate courses on motivational interviewing the opportunity to develop the effective use of their skills in their everyday practice and to receive a certificate of competence in MI.Prospective participants will be expected to show evidence of attendance at Step 1 and 2 training before attending Step 3.. The workshop is taught by 2 highly experienced trainers and restricted to 18 participants. Competence will be assessed on the basis of a recorded case study which will be coded by one assessor according to the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity code (MITI) and assessed in a more narrative way by a second marker. Successful students will be awarded a certificate of proficiency.

For UK health workers the course is in accordance with NICE guidelines on behaviour change (Oct 2007).

For alcohol and drug workers from England the course supports DANOS standards , HSC3111, AB2.2012, , AF2.2012, AI1.2012, SCDHSC0344, SCDHSC0352.

By the end of the course participants will be able to

  • Describe when to use motivational interviewing (and when not to)
  • Conduct an in-depth assessment of a service-user's motivation
  • Use advanced listening skills to support clients' self-confrontation
  • Use a range of strategies to 'roll with resistance' and manage discord with challenging service-users
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the key principles of behaviour change.

Toni Gilligan
Toni Gilligan trained as a Clinical Psychologist and is a UKCP Registered Gestalt Psychotherapist. Toni worked with the NHS psychiatric services for 14 years. She is now in private practice, co-director of the Gestalt Centre and President-elect of the Association for the Advancement of Gestalt Therapy. She has worked in the voluntary sector and social services, and on the professional guidance committee of an innovatory therapeutic community. She has extensive experience of people with substance misuse problems and other severe psychological disturbances.

Pip Mason
Pip trained as a nurse,and studied cognitive-behavioural approaches to counselling people with addictions problems including alcohol and gambling. She is author of Health Behavior Change, A Guide for Health Professionals and author of numerous training packages relating to substance use, counselling and health promotion. Pip is an active member of the international network of motivational interviewing trainers and has recently been practicing MI in her work with problem gamblers.
